Another month has passed, lots of things have happened in the world since our last update; we hope that you have lived many positive and uplifting moments. For those in the Southern hemisphere you must be getting ready to put on an extra couple of layers as the winter arrives slowly but surely. As for those in the Northern hemisphere, you must be enjoying the longer days and the milder temperatures of the approaching summer! Those in the tropics, i hope you get a nice breeze wishing that usual warmth away.
Today we release the second part of SEWN News North Coast, which will show you some behind the scene insight of the shooting there. We had a lot of fun while we were there, had a couple of mishaps with our van, but remained well and healthy to invite everybody for a special screening at the Pizza Barn, in the village of Waipu. A night to remember! So stop whatever you’re doing for a a couple of minutes and check it out!
The next release will be on the 17th of June in which you’ll have a peak on the making of a wooden surfboard with Roger Hall made out of 3 different types of wood (Cabbage Tree, Agave and Mahogany).
Stay stoked on life!!!
The SEWN Production team, wishing you all the best!
How’s everything? Hope yous are getting waves and fair weather and plenty waves where ever you may find yourselves!
Out today is the first part of SEWN News North Coast. Our assistant editor from Paris, Fred Utard, edited this piece, which introduces the North Coast, Ruakaka in Bream Bay and Orewa, where we based ourselves. You will also hear more about Roger Hall and Trent Lillis, the two longbaorders we will focus on for this chapter. So disconnect what ever you are doing for a few minutes and dive into Northland, New Zealand!
Today we present the North chapter to you. We continue our travels towards the North of Auckland, into Northland, and finally settled in Ruakaka, Bream Bay, south of Whangarei to catch up with visionary surfboard shaper Roger Hall. We also spent some time in Orewa with Trent Lillis. Check out some of the production stills from the shooting in that region (click on the image):
The next release is on the 22nd of April where we’ll showcase the first part of SEWN News North Coast, presenting the characters and the region.
In the mean time, enjoy the stills and be happy!
The SEWN Production team
PS: Congrats to SEWN Director Nicolas Brikke, who came second to the 16th annual Makorori First Light in Gisborne 2 weeks ago. The contest was on as the Japan tsunami hit NZ coasts, causing alternating high tides and low tides every 20 minutes fro the whole afternoon. Nicolas beat Kelly Ryan, local and numerous times national champ. Daniel Procter, son of Moti Procter, won the competition. Yeeewww!!!
Before presenting the next release, I’d like to express thoughts of strength and courage for the people of Christchurch who are experiencing a dark day in New Zealand’s history. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you, may you find the way to go forward from this shattering situation.
Today we are releasing the Sneak Preview of the West Coast showcasing exclusive footage of the movie. We showed this clip at the New Plymouth Surf Riders Club as well as the Waitara Bar Board Riders Club, where the characters are based and most of the footage got taken.
The music is played by Mark O’Connor and his band, The Boardy Boyz, advocating for the halt of mining Iron rich sand of their coast. Enjoy the video!!!
This release seals off the West Coast chapter and we take the road towards the North Coast, where many intense experiences were lived and beautiful footage captured. Hope you’re boiling to see the new chapter!
The following release will be on the 25th of March with production stills of the North Coast.
Until then, take care of yourself and the ones you love,
Hello and Happy New Year to all you Friends of SEWN!

Today we would like to present the first part of SEWN News, where SEWN Director Nicolas Brikké is talking about the shooting in the West Coast and the choice of the characters: Mark O’Connor, Jo Moore and Wayne “Arch” Arthur. Here they are, again with the French and Spanish translations underneath:
First of all, I’d like to express heartfelt feelings to the family and friends of Andy Irons for the shocking passing away of one of surfing’s greats. We surfers are all in this special family that pushes us to take pleasure from nature and of the beauties of the world, every once in a while they take back one of us to remind us where we stand. May your soul rest in the ocean.
Today we initiate the West Coast chapter!
Check out here some of the production stills and also stills from footage taken there by clicking on the picture below. The production team was based in New Plymouth and we met up with Mark O’Connor and Jo Moore:
Mark O’Connor is the current President of the New Plymouth Surfriders Club at Fitzroy beach, and a keen Blues musician and plays with his band the Boardy Boys.
Jo Moore is a member of the club and also does a lot for the Waitara club and community. She was pregnant and gave birth while we were there.
We also connected with the founder of the New Plymouth Surfriders Club and local legend, Wayne ‘Arch’ Arthur to share local knowledge and stories.
Enjoy this release! Next one will be on the 26th of November with the first part of SEWN News West Coast.
Today we conclude the East Coast and to do so, we proudly release the Sneak Preview of SEWN East Coast featuring Moti Procter and James Tanner. The clip features exclusive footage that will be used in the film on music from the Ka’au Crater Boys from Hawai’i and from Morcheeba from the UK (The music from now onwards will be sourced only from New Zealand artists):
NOTE: This clip will not be part of the East Coast chapter of the finished film, its purpose is only to showcase some exclusive footage. It does not have interview content and focusses on the footage taken from the water camera pods as the East Coast people were intrigued to see the results of the board camera techniques.
We are now switching to SEWN promotional releases every 3 weeks, so the next release will be on the 5th of November with the production stills of the West Coast shooting.
Enjoy the clip and we hope you are looking forward to the West Coast!!
